Media Criticism

http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1067

This is an article by Seth Ackerman called The Most Biased Name in the News, Fox News Channel's Extraordinary Right-Wing Tilt. It talks about how Fox News has a right-wing tilt, or biased towards conservatives.  It begins the article with saying that conservatives have to pick apart most liberal-biased news, but now most conservatives "praise" Fox News because of its conservative tilt.  Fox News has slogans like, "Fair and Balanced", and "We report, you decide" to help sway the image of being a conservative news network, but the public and most conservatives seem to agree that Fox News is a right-winged news network.  The reason there is so much criticism in this article is because as much as Fox denies being conservative, there is so much evidence against them.  Ackerman lists a number of conservative editors, including Fox's Vice President, and gives the certain jobs they have for Fox; usually anchors.  In my opinion this is a good critique because Ackerman lists several people who work for Fox who were big named right-winged politicians/editors.  The facts support the accusation of Fox being right-winged.  Ackerman does not list any suggestions for improvement, he is just proving the fact that Fox is a mostly conservative network, even though they deny it frequently.

  1. I've always thought that good journalism and news reporting were when everything is presented in an objective manner and both sides of the issue are given so that the readers/viewers are able to develop their own opinion on the matter. Unfortunately, Fox is known to always have the conservative point of view while CNN typically takes the liberal stance on issues. I know it is impossible to completely eliminate biases, but sometimes I feel like it's totally blatant and that's not how the news should be reported to its audience in my opinion.

  2. Any question of this was put to bed recently when FOX donated millions to the Republican party. Also, the corporation is listed as an Entertainment channel and not a News Channel with the government.

  3. FOX news always seemed right-winged to me, and it confused me when they would try to say that they were "fair and balanced." If a news network is right-winged, man up and embrace it. I feel like they're losing their credibility when they are saying that they're not conservative, and then reporting conservatively. Do they even have any liberal people working for them?

  4. I think that FOX news has been viewed as, "Right-winged," for years and years. However at least they make an effort to appear, "Fair and balanced," and perhaps they're even making a concious effort to go that way with their news channel. In any case it would take a long time for the population to feel that way because of their stereotype. And the fact that they continue to donate to the Republic party and hire right-wing news reporters certainly doesn't help sell their case of being fair and balanced.
