I found this article to be very interesting dealing with the police and this weekend. They are afraid that since it's homecoming, students are going to be a bit more out of control than other weekends, so they increase patrols for the entire weekend. The police are using the deterrence method to make sure students are safe, this is due to last year's springfest. I think it is very interesting how different the police have been this year compared to the other years I was here. There is a definite change in how many police there are and how frequently I see police around on the weekends. Not even going to lie, the increase in the police force this year has made me stop and think before doing anything, especially with underage drinking. What they are trying to do has definitely worked for me, as in the charges outway the benefits of that one decision.
I agree that there have been many more police out this year. And it may be a good thing because I am sure people think twice before doing things. There are however some police out there that think that just because they see a group of studnet they are going to do something unruley and will harrass them and pick on them just because they can. Its like they label all students the same because they think we are going to do something bad.
ReplyDeleteHaving taken part in Homecoming this weekend I would have to disagree with the statement the Harrisonburg PD made. I tailgated in the baseball lot before the game Saturday and the cops that were walking around weren't doing much. They came up to my friends and I at one point and told us we weren't allowed to play games like flip cup or beer pong but they didn't ask for any ID's or anything. They seem to be attempting to have more of a token presence then actually enforcing anything.
ReplyDeleteI think its funny how Springfest is incorporated in each Homecoming article. I think the students understand that it wasnt acceptable to have a riot. Also, i feel like Homecoming weekend really isnt much crazier than any other weekend. If anything it would be less crazy because of all the parents around. Just a thought.
