Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel like my only friend
Is the city I live in, the city of angels
Lonely as I am, together we cry
I drive on her streets 'cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
I never worried, now that is a lie
I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love, take me all the way
I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love, take me all the way
It's hard to believe that there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe that I'm all alone
At least I have her love, the city she loves me
Lonely as I am, together we cry
I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love, take me all the way
I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day
Take me to the place I love, take me all the way
Under the bridge downtown
Is where I drew some blood
Under the bridge downtown
I could not get enough
Under the bridge downtown
Forgot about my love
Under the bridge downtown
I gave my life away

First off, I just want to say how awesome this blog assignment is because i'm obsessed with music. Second, the song I chose was Under The Bridge by The Chili Peppers. RHCP is my all-time favorite band in the world, and a lot of the time people don't understand the deeper meaning behind their songs. This song in particular has to deal with Anthony Kiedis' (the lead singer) serious drug problem. This song is about heroin and the feeling that he gets when he's doing it. When he talks about "under the bridge, is where I drew some blood, under the bridge downtown, I could not get enough, Under the bridge downtown, forgot about my love, under the bridge downtown, I gave my life away", this is the climax of the song. If you realize that he is talking about heroin, then you can make the clear connections. The drug problem in America is a serious one, especially for people who have enough money to afford it. That's why many artists have drug problems. RHCP's songs are never too political, but usually do have a deeper meaning. Many times that deeper meaning has to do with drugs or women.
Love the Chili Peppers! Saw them in concert a couple of times..
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about how there are hidden meanings in songs and I especially agree with your statement about people who can afford drugs makes it easy for them to get hooked on them.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there is a stronger message when it is more subtle like it is in this song
ReplyDeleteYeah this song definitely has to reflect Anthony Kiedis's drug addiction. Hands down his battle with drugs is probably the most incredible story youll ever hear. Its amazing he is still alive to say the least.
